Dälek - Gutter Tactics

Dälek - Gutter Tactics (2009)

Their latest record is more along the lines of the last one, but with still more darkness. I need to listen to this album once or twice more before I can really pass judgement on it.

Dälek - Abandoned Language

Dälek - Abandoned Language (2007)

This record draws more on the shoegaze influence, in my opinion, and is more relaxing as a result. Better for working and relaxing, but still with quite a bit of bite.

"It's purely hip-hop, in the purest sense. If you listen to what hip-hop has historically been, it was all about digging in different crates and finding different sounds, and finding different influences to create. If Afrika Bambaataa wasn't influenced by Kraftwerk, we wouldn't have 'Planet Rock.' So, in that sense, what we do is strictly hip-hop.

If there is a difference. It's that the palette of sounds we work with is more varied than what has been called hip- hop in the last 10 years. Somehow, as hip-hop grew, it's been put into this box. I think it's funny when people are like, 'That's not hip-hop. It's this and this and this.' You can try to rationalize it as whatever you want to rationalize it as." - MC Dälek, around the time this album came out

Dälek - Absence

Dälek - Absence (2004)

This record is quite a bit noisier and darker than their previous record, which is really saying something. MC Dälek's vocals are sometimes just barely above the din of Oktopus/Still's production. Perfect for driving around decaying city scapes.

Dälek - From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots

Dälek - From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots (2002)

Experimental hip hop from Newark, NJ. Noisy, heavy, yet atmospheric. There's almost an industrial/shoegaze base on which they operate. This record really showcases the mix of styles that they develop later on in different directions.

Boyd Rice & Friends - Music, Martinis, and Misanthropy

Boyd Rice & Friends - Music, Martinis, and Misanthropy (1990)

Neofolk/experimental. Lyrics mostly about hating people, juxtaposed with tape manipulation (including reversing some interviews about the Columbine shootings) and dreamy guitars. Boyd Rice is also an archivist, prankster, asshole, and former tiki bar operator.
